We Are More Together

On Synod Gathering's first day: You are not enough, and neither am I...but in Christ, WE are more than enough.

May 31, 2024 |

Synod Gathering 2024 began with a stirring opening worship in P.E. Monroe Auditorium at Lenoir-Rhyne University with Bishop Tim Smith preaching.  Bishop Smith, introduced the Gathering Scripture text (Romans 8:37) and reminded us, “You are not enough, and neither am I….but in Christ, WE are more than enough.”

The most recent Lay Preaching cohort was commissioned and, the worship offering was collected to support the 14 campus ministries in the NC Synod. And, with the generosity of those at Synod Gathering, the total collected—$1,200—will support campus ministries, providing students with more through Christ-centered community! More support, encouragement, and opportunities for discernment and conversation. Thanks be to God!

Keynote—The Rev. Dr. Jay Augustine

Thursday’s keynote was presented by the Rev. Dr. Jay Augustine, Senior Pastor of St. Joseph AME Church, Durham, professor, and author. Dr. Jay Augustine invited Gathering attendees into the theme, in part by asking, “What will you, as members of Jesus’ faithful church, do to make sure to expand the “WE” rather than exclude?” How might we live into this Gathering theme, “We are more”?

Workshops

Thursday afternoon offered an opportunity to investigate many topics for learning including Supporting Veterans & Service Members, Understanding Gen Z & Their Faith, and Finances in Difficult Times.

Block Party

Thursday concluded with a first-ever Synod Gathering Block Party. Live music from three synod bands filled the air as participants visited tables staffed by representatives from the synod’s many agencies and institutions—tables that offered fun games (have you ever played Plinko at a church event?), prizes, and ministry information. A cornhole tournament offered a chance for friendly competition, The Dwelling, Winston-Salem, provided delicious food truck fare for supper, and congregations and individuals filled the bishop’s car with 500 balloons! Each balloon represents a lantern purchased for the ELCA Youth Gathering hurricane relief kits—that’s 500 lanterns! Thanks to all those who supported the efforts of NC Synod youth and for being the church together—all for the sake of the world.
