The theme of the North Carolina Synod Gathering, “Come and See, Go and Tell,” was woven together by storytelling. Across worship, sessions, and workshops, participants listened to stories of what God is up to in this synod and its partnerships.
In our last planned session before closing worship, the roles of participants and session leaders reversed. It was the participants’ turn to share, and the leaders’—members of the strategic planning team, synod council, and staff—turn to listen.
A year ago, Bishop Emily Hartner stood on stage at Koury Convention Center and shared a vision for the North Carolina Synod grounded in collaboration. As we make way for a new strategic plan, it is only fitting that the process begins with deep listening to the Holy Spirit and to one another.
Bishop Emily shared more about the process during her time onstage at Synod Gathering. She explained that one of the first questions in the listening sessions has focused on the bright spots in the synod, inviting the room to put on their neon green sunglasses because this synod is full of bright spots. Folks shared a few of them at Thursday’s Block Party: outreach, campus ministry, welcoming strangers, inclusivity, advanced lay ministry, and more.
The listening sessions began with a short devotional, prayer, and covenant for our shared time together. Participants spoke candidly about the bright spots in their congregations, the real struggles they are facing as leaders in this church, the purpose of our shared work, and how the Gospel message is present in today’s world.
During the sessions, participants took turns speaking and listening deeply to one another so each voice could be heard. Those perspectives and dreams—along with yours—will be considered as the strategic planning team continues to discern next steps for the North Carolina Synod.
Listening sessions will continue this month on Zoom, so the team can hear from even more people from different settings across the synod. Each voice, dream, and perspective is valued.
If you participated in a listening session, thank you. If you have not yet participated, we want to hear from you. Sign up for a listening session today!
