Advent Takes Civic Engagement to the Neighborhood

Advent, Charlotte, found a great way to live out the ELCA's statement on civic engagement!

God furnished a gloriously beautiful day on Sunday, September 27, in Charlotte for Advent Lutheran’s nonpartisan Voter Info Canvassing Day in College Downs, the neighborhood adjacent to the church. Knocking on doors is not for everyone, but we got the job done, even with fewer volunteers than in our two prior election drives!

By the numbers, according to the evaluations completed by the canvassers, we had 16 volunteers: 15 walkers and one stay-back person to account for all returning canvassers. Nine of the volunteers were first-time canvassers with Advent, two of whom were children. We covered 204 houses, with at least 42 residents opening their doors. We were able to leave general info on all doorsteps, plus an explanation of the three constitutional amendments and a sample ballot for that precinct. Though, as we expected, most people were already registered to vote, we gave out 10 registration forms, a few in Spanish.

All in all, it was a great way to live out the ELCA’s statement on civic engagement!
