Philadelphia, Dallas, “does something”
At Philadelphia, Dallas, we celebrated “God’s Work. Our Hands.” weekend with a brief and casual worship service where everyone was commissioned to go and “do something.” We followed worship with boxed lunches from Subway; then 56 folks from our congregation spent the afternoon serving our neighbors. Our men’s group created a garden for Lutheran Services of the Carolinas’ “Faith Farm” Adult Day Care site. Other groups baked and delivered goodies to the Robin Johnson Hospice House in Dallas on both Saturday and Sunday. We wrapped 75 gifts for “Santas for Seniors” at Heritage Oaks Assisted Living in Gastonia. One group put together 60 treat bags for a nutrition program site that is normally housed at Philadelphia but is currently being housed at Holy Communion, Dallas, while we do some renovations. Our youngest children and their parents or grandparents made birthday bags for children in need in our community. Another group put together 36 school kits for Lutheran World Relief. Our card ministry led a group that made 250 bookmarks for local teachers, prayed for each teacher, and then delivered the bookmarks along with bags of school supplies to the four schools in our community. Another group put together 24 “walker food bags” for the homeless in our community. We created and delivered gift baskets for 10 of our shut-ins/older members. Another group prepared and delivered a meal to The Shelter of Gaston County, a domestic violence shelter for women and children. Finally, a couple of our youth painted a Little Free Library.
