Over 100 people gathered for the Pre-Assembly event at the Koury Convention Center in Greensboro. The Rev. Dr. Mark Fitzsimmons, the keynote speaker, made an insightful and inspiring presentation regarding Mutual Ministry for congregations. In the two morning sessions, Pastor Mark laid the groundwork for the day by noting that church ministry is “mutual” by nature, “it is about healthy relationships and caring for each other. From the beginning, to be a follower of Jesus you have to walk with others.”
For over two thousand years the ministry of the church has been at its best when it is mutual. Yet Mutual Ministry often remains unaddressed except for the constitutionally-required committee, which bears that name (ELCA Model Constitution for Congregations C13.04). More than a committee, however, intentional mutual ministry can transform congregations, volunteers, and elected leaders—both rostered and lay.
The afternoon sessions were dedicated to best practices for mutual ministry committees for congregations according to their average attendance in worship. The event ended with a small group exercise where volunteer rostered ministers and event attendees acting as mutual ministry committees simulated conversations focusing on rostered ministers’ continuing education and self-care.
The Rev. Dr. Alfredo Oviedo, assistant to the Bishop for Leadership and Coordination of Care for Rostered Ministers, exclaimed, “This event surpassed my expectations in the number of participants, quality of teaching, and wisdom and experience shared during the event. Thanks to our keynote speaker, all participants, and synod staff who made it possible!”
