KEYNOTER: The Rev. Dr. Paul Hill
Dr. Paul Hill is the new Executive Director, effective July 9, 2007,
of the Youth & Family
Institute of Bloomington, Minnesota. He served as the Director of the Center
for Youth Ministries at Wartburg Theological Seminary from 1994-2005. While there,
he developed Wartburg’s Youth Leadership School and Youth and Family Ministry
Certification School. Most recently, he has served on the team in Children, Youth,
and Family Ministry of Luther Seminary.
The Youth & Family Institute is a non-profit, faith-based organization
that seeks to help families pass on Christian faith from milestone to
milestone. Its mission is to strengthen congregations and families to
nurture faith, pass on faith, and live well in Christ. Dr. Hill will
address the 2008 theme, “God’s Work. Our Hands. Passing On
the Faith.”
ELCA REPRESENTATIVE: ELCA Vice President Carlos
Peña
Carlos Peña was elected by the 2005 Churchwide Assembly to serve
a six-year term as ELCA Vice-President. After graduating in 1976 from
the University of Houston with a degree in music education, he became
a band director. In 1979 he joined his family’s business, Kleen
Supply Co. Inc., Galveston, Texas, which also acquired C. M. Distributing
Corp., Houston, in 1999. He now serves as president of both companies.
Peña has extensive experience in the church. He was president
of First Lutheran Church, Galveston, from 1989 to 1995, and was vice
president of the ELCA Texas-Louisiana Gulf Coast Synod from 1991 to 1995.
In 1993, he was elected to serve a six-year term on the ELCA Church Council
and was on the council’s Executive Committee.

Pre:Assembly Evangelism Event: The Rev. Ernie Hinojosa
Pr. Ernie
Hinojosa has been a major presenter at a variety of Evangelism events
across the ELCA over the past few years. He served as a pastor/mission
developer of Camino Real Christian Fellowship (ELCA) in San Antonio,
Texas, before becoming the mission director for the NC Synod late in
2007. Pastor Ernie brings much experience and a variety of viewpoints
to this conference.
The Rev. Dr. Melvin Jimenez, President of la Igelesia
Luterana Costarricense (ILCO),
the Lutheran Church in Costa Rica.
Pr. Melvin Jiménez Marín has been Pastor and
President of the Costa Rican Lutheran Church (Iglesia Luterana Costarricense,
or ILCO) since 2000. He is a founding member of the church, which celebrates
its 20th anniversary in 2008.
Since 2005, Jiménez has been vice-moderator of the Conference
of Bishops and Presidents of the member Lutheran Churches of the Lutheran
World Federation in Latin America. From 1991 to 1996, he was executive
secretary of the Communion of Lutheran Churches of Central America (CILCA).
From 1990 to 1996, he served as executive director of the Latin American
Evangelical Council of Christian Education/Popular Education (CELADEC),
an organization comprised of 200 church bodies that
work on Christian education for the development of poor sectors in Latin
America.
Additionally, Jiménez is founder and director of six non-governmental
organizations that work with social justice issues. He has also been active in
promoting relationships among 10 European countries
and various non-governmental organizations.
Jiménez is a 1993 graduate of the University of Costa Rica
and earned his M.A. in Theology from the Lutheran School of Theology
in Chicago, Ill.
Meals

Cafeteria tickets for meals served in the Cromer Center on campus must
be ordered in advance on the assembly
registration form by the May
1 deadline. Cafeteria meal tickets cannot be bought at assembly* except
for children.
The new Complete Meal Package begins with lunch on
Thursday and ends with lunch on Saturday. There is a $5 discount over
the cost of buying the meals individually. The package cost is $50. Tickets
may also be purchased for individual meals on the registration form.
Menu choices include a vegetarian option.
Your pre-ordered meal tickets will be in the packet you receive upon
check-in at assembly.
Children’s Meals: Children's meals can only be
purchased on site: 2 years & under eat free. For age 3-10 meals are
approx. 50% off at door. Age 11 and older are priced the same as an adult.
Do NOT prepay or pre-order children's meals.
Children in childcare have meals with their parents/guardians.
On-Campus Meal Option: Fast food can be purchased at
the Bear's Lair on campus (lower level of the Cromer Center).
Off-Campus Meal Options: A list of restaurants within
close driving distance of the campus will be listed on this site prior
to assembly. Check back in May.
* Pre-registering for meals assures that there will be enough food
for those registered. The number served at assembly stretches the capability
of the cafeteria meant to serve far fewer students.
Housing
CAMPUS HOUSING
Housing during assembly is available at Lenoir-Rhyne College in campus dormitories.
The units are air-conditioned, but not individually controlled. Depending
on your preference, you may need a small fan or extra blankets. Neither
is provided; you will need to bring them with you. Sheets, pillows and
towels are provided.
You must register for housing on the assembly registration form by the
May 1 deadline.
Roommates: If you want to request a roommate, do so
on the assembly registration form. Roommates should send in their registration
forms together. Otherwise a roommate may be assigned. For emergency purposes,
room assignments CANNOT be changed at check-in.
You will receive your key and roommate assignment when you check in
at assembly. Be careful to return your key before you return home. There
is a sizeable fee for unreturned or lost keys.
OFF-CAMPUS HOUSING
For those who prefer to stay in hotels during the
assembly, there are many hotels/motels available in Hickory, N.C. A list
is provided of those offering an assembly rate. You are advised to book
your room early.
